Boat Crew
Member Training: Flotilla 4-8 maintains an active member training program towards helping members to obtain the boatcrew qualification and supporting those already qualified with new learning opportunities. To support Flotilla 4-8's active Operations program, realistic, hands-on training is offered to all members. This training meets basic requirements for boatcrew qualifications, but, expands to meet the demands of operating in the open waters of the Gulf coast. Swimming pool sessions are conducted for in-water survival techniques, hypothermia prevention and use of specialized equipment. These drills are fun, informative and often attended by long time Boat Crew members.
Surface Operations are conducted under Coast Guard orders aboard Auxiliary facilities under a coxswain and a minimum number of certified boat crew. Member owned boats and trailers are considered "vessels of the United States" when under orders and under the liability protection of the USCG when acting within that scope. Qualifications are earned by completing the proper PQS for the qualification being sought and then receiving QE approval through on-shore exams and underway check rides. Surface Ops Qualifications
ANNOUNCEMENT: Another boat crew QE was held Saturday, 17 Nov07 and more boat crew passed!! As one of the coxswains remarked recently, "We have them crawling out the woodwork now..."
from Fourth
Division:
"To the new Boat Crew Qualified members of 081-04.
James A. Konczol
Odile Maggiore Tim Hale
Crew,
Congratulations upon completing your training for Boat Crew and for
passing your QE today. You have all worked hard and I look forward to
having any of you serve on my boats.
Please keep up your skills by serving on as many boats as asked. The
Division needs crew like you to man it's boats and carry out its many
missions. Remember, you only need 12 hours per year under way time to
maintain your qualification, but the wise person will do many more to
hone skills.
Again, my congratulations to all."
